| Terry Thompson | In our full service shoe repair and service facility, Store owner Terry Thompson, a Certified Pedorthist and Orthopedic Technician, and Luke Cunning, an Orthopedic Shoe Technician and Shoe Repair Technician, perform all types of shoe and leather repair and service. From small jobs, like installing protective toe caps and dance taps to major footwear repairs and leather sewing, Luke and Terry have the know-how and the experience to get the job done! To the left, Terry is looking over the paperwork for his next job. From the moment our client walks through the door, all work is documented to avoid confusion and to ensure that our skilled professionals can produce the desired results for our clients. And if, for any reason, the job can't be completed as requested, we will notify the client and explain their options before we proceed. To the right, we see Luke resoling a western boot. When he is finished, not only will this boot function exactly as it should, but the replacement sole will look very much like the original sole, and the brand new sole and the new stitching will be the only evidence of a repair. This boot will also be cleaned and refinished before it is returned to its owner, completing the repair to our exacting standards.

Custom Orthotics: Support without pain First, a cast of the foot
Then an orthotic is formed...
Finally, the edges are smoothed and the orthotic is ready. | Custom orthotics are useful for supporting the arches of the foot (there are 3 arches in your foot - medial, lateral and metatarsal) and controlling unwanted movement. They also have the long term benefit of helping to prevent further injury to the foot. At Cobbler's Corner, we make a soft orthotic. Unlike hard orthotics, which are normally made of hard plastic, a soft orthotic cushions the foot because it is made with special materials which absorb shock. Our orthotics also run the entire length of the shoe, completely supporting the bottom of the foot. Our custom orthotics are made by a 3 step process. First, a plaster cast is made by pressing the client's foot into a mold, creating an impression of the bottom of the foot, then pouring plaster into the mold. Then, once the cast is ready, special orthotic material is formed around the cast, creating a perfect match to the client's foot. Finally, the finished orthotic will have its edges smoothed and rounded so that it will fit comfortably into the client's shoe and around the client's foot. This process is designed to create an insole which completely supports the sole of the foot without allowing unwanted movement or creating specific pressure points. This allows greater mobility and relief from pain and helps reduce the formation of calluses and other commonly seen friction and pressure point injuries.

Build-ups and Flares - Stability for our Clients | To the left are several examples of "Build-ups". Typically, one of a pair of shoes will have the sole built up to compensate for a difference in length between the right leg and the left leg. Specially selected lightweight materials and advanced construction techniques minimize the weight of the built up sole, making walking far easier and less tiring. Notice the wedge shape of the sole, making it thicker at the heel and the upturned curve at the toe. This construction technique, known as a rocker sole, allows a more natural motion of the foot, allowing for a normal walking gait despite the increased thickness of the sole. This is a very important feature as it relieves excess stress at the hip and other leg joints while walking. Notice also, the selection of materials which complement the color of the shoe and the use of the original sole material at the bottom of the shoe. Touches like these allow a more pleasing appearance of the shoe and make the modification less noticeable. As we can see, the modifications at the left were performed on a canvas shoe, an athletic shoe, and a leather casual shoe. We are able to to modify virtually any type of footwear to accommodate our clients' needs.
| | | | The modification to the left is known as a flare. This type of modification is very useful in controlling ankle instability and other problems which may cause a roll or tilt of the foot to one side. This particular flare is mainly confined to the heel area of the shoe. Other flares may extend farther toward the front of the shoe, depending on the type and degree of the movement being managed. A flare can also be applied to either side of the shoe, or in some cases, to both sides of the shoe. Here again, we notice that not only is the modification functional, but care has been taken to choose a material which complements the color of the shoe. Also, great care is taken to avoid damage to the surrounding material of the shoe while attaching the flare, allowing a more pleasing and natural appearance. We at Cobbler's Corner realize that the fact that our clients may require shoe modification does not necessarily mean their shoes must be ugly and we make every effort to ensure that the modifications will attract as little attention as possible.

A client tries out his new Thompson Drop Foot Device. Many of our clients now enjoy a level of mobility they never thought possible thanks to the Thompson Drop Foot Device. | One of our proudest achievements at Cobbler's Corner is the Thompson Drop Foot Device. The Thompson Drop Foot Device was specially designed by Terry Thompson for people afflicted with drop foot to provide greater walking mobility without them having to wear a brace which is bulky, heavy or hard to use. The Thompson Drop Foot Device supports the front of the foot, preventing the toes from dragging along the floor as the client walks.
| Its unique, patented design allows the Thompson Drop Foot Device to be easily attached to virtually any shoe and it can be transferred from one pair of shoes to another with little difficulty, because modification of the shoe itself is minimal. The Thompson Drop Foot Device wraps around the back of the leg for support, allowing for a large support area with no skin irritation. The Thompson Drop Foot Device is also lightweight, making walking easier, and has no components inside the shoe, making it comfortable to wear. Also, thanks to the Thompson Drop Foot Device's unique design, it won't attract attention with the ugly metal parts normally associated with shoe mounted supports. | Terry Thompson with his Patented Thompson Drop Foot Device |

 | Sometimes, foot problems are too severe for orthotics or modifications to correct. In such cases, a custom shoe is often the solution. ←At left are some examples of custom shoes made at Cobbler's Corner. In each case, the shoe is made to accommodate a severe foot condition, such as a partial amputation or severe foot deformity, which can't be controlled in any other way. Notice that despite the unusual design of the shoes, care is taken to maintain as pleasant and attractive an appearance as possible. Custom shoes are not formed on a last like factory shoes. Instead, as with a custom orthotic, the process begins by casting the client's foot. Unlike an orthotic, though, the cast for a shoe is of the entire foot. The shoe is then formed around the cast, making it a perfect fit. Interior padding of the shoe and insole construction depend on the specific needs of the client. Internal fillers and other special construction details, such as wide shanks, are sometimes included to help compensate for partial amputations or other foot conditions. Custom shoes are generally too costly for the average consumer, but because they can be made to fit feet of any shape or size and can be designed to accommodate virtually any foot condition, they are ideal for anyone with a foot condition too severe to wear a factory made shoe. At Cobbler's Corner, we have made custom shoes for clients for whom walking in regular shoes would have been very difficult. Indeed, for some of our clients, these shoes may mean the difference between walking and a wheelchair. ←This is a typical plaster cast used for making a custom shoe. Casts like this allow us to make the custom shoe a perfect fit.
